?Dry Mouth?, which in medical terminology is known as Xerostomia, is a condition caused due to lack of sufficient saliva

Almost all of us may have experienced a dry mouth at some point, especially if we are stressed or nervous. however, dry mouth can be a regular problem for some. it can affect people aged 30 and above.

The causes of dry mouth are plenty, although certain medications are the most common cause of this problem. for example, the use of anti-allergic, anti-hypertension, anti-Parkinson drugs, anti-depressants and some, muscle relaxants, may cause dry mouth as a side-effect, says Dr. Wafa Khan, a dental surgeon of Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah

Other causes are irradiation of the head and neck region, anxiety,  dehydration, salivary gland dysfunction and menopause.

The symptoms associated with dry mouth include bad breath, difficulty in swallowing, speaking, wearing dentures, a burning sensation in the mouth, disturbances of taste, cracked lips, feeling thirsty often, and a dry rough tongue which tends to stick to the palate. it is not necessary for all symptoms to be present in the same individual; he may suffer from a few or all depending on the severity of his/her condition.

Dry mouth is a cause of gum disease and subsequently resulting in tooth loss for three out of 10 adults. Oral candidiasis (a fungal condition) is one of the most common infections associated with dry mouth, says  Dr. Wafa Khan.

The dental surgeon suggests that symptoms can be relieved by sipping water through the day. Avoiding drinks that dry out the mouth ? excessive coffee, tea, some frizzy drinks, alcohol, smoking and  spicy food ? will also help.

There are many products available to relieve a dry mouth. a range of special products including toothpastes, local application gels and mouthwashes can be used to get relief from symptoms. in severe cases, saliva supplements can be used to replenish a dry mouth and keep it lubricated.

Persons suffering from dry mouth should take an active part in treatment  and management of their condition. They should identify products and practices that provide them maximum relief.

Also brushing teeth with a soft brush at bed time, and after meals, regular and gentle flossing between teeth will go a long way in promoting dental health. Avoid alcohol-containing mouthwashes and sticky sweet foods for a better dental care.
