Dr. Oz: Parathyroid Glands

Dr. Oz Parathyroid Glands; Today Dr. Oz talks about an organ he has never talked about before and it could be the reason you have brittle bones and a whole variety of other symptoms. Mila was Dr. Oz’s assistant of the day who was very excited to be on stage with him, although Dr. Oz wasn’t talking about poop she informed him that everyday she examines her poop thanks to him. Today this segment is Dr. Oz: Parathyroid Glands | Calcium in the Blood & Bones, in case you missed it.

Today Dr. Oz is talking about bones, and asked Mila if she has ever broken a bone or anyone in the family has ever broken a bone from osteoporosis which led to the topic of the parathyroid gland.

The parathyroid glands are small endocrine glands in the neck that produce parathyroid hormone. Humans have four parathyroid glands, which are usually located behind the thyroid gland, and, in rare cases, within the thyroid gland or in the chest. Parathyroid glands control the amount of calcium in the blood and within the bones.

Dr. Oz explains how the parathyroid glands are fundamental in how the body regulates calcium.

Dr. Oz said if you have any of the following symptoms he is worried about the parathyroid. He went to say they have a difficult time in the operating room trying to find the parathyroid glands because they are the size of lentils. They regulate the parathyroid hormone that tells the body how much calcium is supposed to be in our blood.

If even one of the parathyroid glands aren’t functioning properly and gets too strong it can mess up everything. the parathyroid glands are in the neck behind the thyroid.

The parathyroid glands send out hormones that regulate calcium in the body, if you have the right amount of calcium, without the right amount of calcium you have big issues especially if the parathyroid has to over compensate for. the parathyroid sends out more of it’s hormone and those hormones suck up the calcium from your bones and thins your bones out. Once the bones thin we have an issue said Dr. Oz, the bones begin to break and we end up with a fracture of our bone.

If we have this problem we end up with Osteoporosis, so next time you’re at the doctors get your calcium levels checked in your blood. If they are too high it means your body is throwing calcium off from the bone when it’s not supposed to because the parathyroid is over reacting.

Dr. Oz recommends taking a 1000 IU of Vitamin D every morning with breakfast or with a little bit of fat so it will absorb it a bit better. it will help bring you all the calcium you need for the body from the intestinal system so you can keep your bones strong and keep those parathyroid’s quiet unless they become a problem from other reasons.

Overactivity of the Parathyroid Gland-Over-production of parathyroid hormone by overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism) can rob you of your health, making you feel run down and tired, causing osteoporosis, and many other serious problems.

Calcium is the main structural component of bones which give them their rigidity. under the presence of parathyroid hormone, bones will give up their calcium in an attempt to increase the blood level of calcium. under normal conditions, this process is very highly tuned and the amount of calcium in our bones remains at a normal high level. under the presence of too much parathyroid hormone, however, the bones will continue to release their calcium into the blood at a rate which is too high resulting in bones which have too little calcium.

This condition is called osteopenia and osteoporosis – when bones are exposed to high levels of parathyroid hormone for several years they become brittle and much more prone to fractures. another way in the parathyroid hormone acts to increase blood levels of calcium is through its influence on the intestines. under the presence of parathyroid hormone the lining of the intestine becomes more efficient at absorbing calcium normally found in our diet.
