Women expect a positive pregnancy test to confirm they are expecting. what they don’t tell you – gas, bloating, hair loss and bleeding – can be normal too.

Many people associate pregnancy symptoms with cravings and, of course, the positive pregnancy test. while the positive test is obviously a good indicator, there are many other symptoms that women get – but never expect – during early pregnancy. below are some of the symptoms you can have during the first trimester of pregnancy. if you are concerned about any symptoms, please consult with a doctor or OB/GYN.

Implantation bleeding

Some women can actually have bleeding, known as implantation bleeding, early on in pregnancy. The bleeding can occur about six to 12 days after conception as the embryo is implanted into the uterus. some women may get cramping associated with the implantation, mistaking it for PMS.

Swollen/ Tender Breasts

Women may notice changes to their breasts about two weeks after conception. Differences may be swelling, pain to the touch or general discomfort. this can vary from woman to woman, although many will comment on feeling too large for their bra to fit properly at times.

Fatigue

If you’re dragging your heels it may not be stress, it could be pregnancy. Women can feel fatigue as early as one week after conception; causing them to sleep more, have difficulty getting out of bed or even having trouble focusing.

Headaches

Not just an excuse anymore – pregnancy hormones can cause headaches and irritability during the first few weeks of pregnancy. while many believe it is the stress, frequent headaches can be a sign of pregnancy.

Food Cravings

This is true – pregnant women do crave certain foods throughout their pregnancy, and many have cravings starting as early as two weeks after conception. Pregnancy cravings may not be chocolate covered pickles, but can be anything from a specific food to unusual snacks. if you are craving ice, dirt, rocks or other inedible objects – contact your doctor as this is a medical condition known as pica.

Gas and BloatingSome of the most embarrassing of all symptoms, gas and bloating are frequently stated amongst early pregnant women. certain foods can often trigger the gas, but some believe as the uterus swells and gets larger, the intestines are pushed around, creating more air pockets.

Hair Loss / Thick Glossy Hair

Not a common early pregnancy symptom, hair loss in pregnancy is still seen by a few women. as the hormones affect the body in different ways, some women may shed excessively. if you are concerned about the amount of hair loss, speak to your doctor. The opposite is also true for many pregnant women. Healthy, thick looking hair is frequently seen in some expectant mothers.
