From Mild to Severe, Indigestion Symptoms Run the Gamut

by Symptom Advice on November 30, 2010

Indigestion symptoms can range from mild to severe. Indigestion is used to describe a range of stomach conditions such as gas, abdominal pain, and reflux. the most common signs and symptoms of indigestion is pain, fullness or discomfort in the upper part of the abdomen where it meets the chest. This is often referred to as a bloating sensation. This is when pressure is building up in the gastrointestinal tract. This can lead to gas escaping in the form of flatulence, burping or belching. These are very common acid indigestion symptoms. if the pressure is relieved in even a small amount when the gas escapes, it is a good sign that indigestion is the cause.

Heartburn is one of the more common indigestion symptoms. Heartburn is defined as a burning sensation in the esophagus, or food tube. This is caused by gastric acids in the stomach being pushed up into the esophagus. the esophageal valve is supposed to stop this from happening. however, a heavy meal, irritating food, or some medical conditions can cause this to fail. those who have consumed a large amount of alcohol or caffeine can also experience indigestion symptoms. A growling or bubbling sensation in the stomach has also been described.

Loss of appetite and feeling sick are signs and symptoms of indigestion as well. often when the stomach is in turmoil, the patient doesn’t feel like eating. sometimes it is because the appetite is being directly affected. or it can be that the person is afraid to eat due to the problems. Feeling sick is another common one of the indigestion symptoms. if connected with heartburn, the patient may be getting sensations of food coming back up. the esophagus may become irritated and this can contribute to a feeling of sickness as well. in some severe cases, vomiting can be one of indigestion symptoms.

Acid indigestion symptoms should be taken seriously. Indigestion is often self-diagnosed and no medical help is sought. but some of the indigestion symptoms can be masking heart or other organ issues. the fullness or pressure in the chest caused by heartburn is near the same as that of a heart attack. Heart attack victims also report nausea and loss of appetite as common indigestion symptoms. if at any time, indigestion causes blood to be vomited, seek medical help immediately. This can be a sign of severe stomach ulcers or other significant health issues. if you see any persistent or severe indigestion symptoms, don’t take a chance. you need to seek medical help as soon as possible.
