Liver Diseases – Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV). In Canada there are about 3,000 new cases each year. For some, the infection can be fatal if the condition becomes chronic, leading to liver scarring (cirrhosis), liver failure or liver cancer.

HBV transmission through blood or body fluids with an infectivity rate of almost 100 times greater than (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) HIV. The infection usually occurs through unprotected sexual contact, intravenous drug users who share needles or other objects (tattoos, piercing), and vertical transmission from mother to baby during childbirth or breastfeeding.

Signs and symptoms of hepatitis B infection include some or all of the following:

dark urine, light weakness, fatigue, drowsiness and loss of appetite Nausea and vomiting Fever Headache Irritability Itching abdominal discomfort diarrhea and muscle pain, joint pain, yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)

Some people may be asymptomatic (without symptoms or signs of infection) that is essential to have a blood test if you think you have been exposed to the virus. Signs and symptoms usually appear 4-6 weeks after infection ranging from mild to severe. Chronic hepatitis is considered, if the body is able to eliminate the virus within 6 months.

Conventional treatments include the use of anti-interferon and antiviral (lamivudine and adefovir dipivoxil) for HBV. unfortunately, these medications are not without side effects. These include symptoms such as cough, diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, hair loss, fatigue, muscle pain, depression and decreased production of red blood cells.
