MESA, Ariz. — New Padres center fielder Cameron Maybin is out with concussion symptoms, manager Bud Black disclosed Saturday morning. Maybin hit his head on a post fielding a fly ball during practice before the game on Wednesday and hasn’t played since.Black said Maybin is day-to-day and has been held out of game action the last few days because of precautionary reasons. he was hitting in the batting cage on Saturday, though, taking soft toss.”You guys may have noticed that Maybin hasn’t been in the lineup the last couple of days,” Black said. “He has a little bit of concussion symptoms. he was doing an outfield drill a couple of days ago and hit his head on the top of the wall. We’ve kept him out for precautionary reasons, but our medical people think he’s going to be fine. he should be back in a couple of days.”The Padres obtained Maybin from the Marlins this past Nov. 13 in exchange for two right-handed relievers: Edward Mujica and Ryan Webb. Maybin is expected to patrol the outfield with Ryan Ludwick in left and will Venable in right.Maybin is 2-for-6 this spring with two doubles and two runs scored. he batted .232 in 82 games last year for Florida.

In other injury news, closer Heath Bell is slated to make his first appearance of the spring on Sunday against the A’s at the Peoria Sports Complex. He’ll work one inning after recovering from a left calf strain.
Bench coach Rick Renteria was back in camp for a moment on Saturday to help manager Bud Black fill out the lineup card for San Diego’s game against the Cubs at HoHoKam Park. Renteria was hit in the mouth with a line drive during batting practice on Thursday and had to undergo surgery to restructure a bone in his palate. Black said Renteria’s mouth was swollen, but he was doing fine. Renteria has been told by doctors to relax for a few days and won’t take part in conducting workouts, Black said.
Black said that left-hander Clayton Richard (sore left shoulder) could still be about a week away from throwing in game action. he has been working on the side, but hasn’t gotten into Cactus League action yet. Black said that at this point he doesn’t expect the setback to hinder Richard’s ability to start the regular season, which opens for the Padres against the Cardinals in St. Louis on March 31.
“He should get four [spring] starts instead of six,” Black said about Richard, who was 14-9 with a 3.75 ERA in 33 starts last year for the Padres.
