Indigestion is also called as ‘dyspepsia’ in medical terms. It is a functional disease and does not cause any structural changes. Hence people do not give much importance to symptoms of dyspepsia.

But neglecting recurrent dyspepsia can give rise to other diseases like peptic ulcer. There is involvement of upper part of gastrointestinal tract in functional dyspepsia. the disease in localised in upper abdomen and it affects up to the upper part of stomach.

Symptoms are usually meal related. they occur due to improper or faulty food intake. Eating unhygienic or stale food can cause indigestion symptoms. Pain or discomfort is the predominant symptom. Pain is present on intake of food. Sometimes there is severe loss of appetite which lasts for a short time.

The affected person does not feel like eating food at all. Nausea is also present. along with nausea, there is heartburn. Heart burn refers to burning sensation present behind the sternum or behind the ribs of left side.

Sometimes heartburn and pain is severe which can make the person feel that he is suffering a heart attack. At such times, immediate visit to the doctor is really important. the physician can do the required tests and confirm you that it is not due to heart attack, which decreases your anxiety.

Other symptoms are early satiety and bloating. due to indigestion, stomach does not digest the food properly and incomplete digestion causes release of gases from the food. this results in bloating or flatulence. Bloating in turn gives you the feeling of early satiety.

Sometimes sour eructations are also associated with all these symptoms. Sudden filling of mouth with dilute saliva known as water brash is also present. Irregular meal timings, eating spicy, oily food, eating hurriedly, drinking aerated beverages are common causes of dyspepsia. Alcohol and tobacco usually give rise to a more severe form of gastric disturbance called as gastritis. But it should be restricted in patients with dyspepsia as well.
