Richard had symptoms of excessive secretion of PTH (parathyroid hormone) and his surgeons recommended surgery.

Yet, when surgery was performed on his neck, the surgeon could not find the parathyroid glands. where should the surgeon look next? what laboratory tests may have been abnormal, causing the physicians to assume he had a parathyroid tumor?

Well…I'd say that he'd have to look at the T3 T4 levels and then maybe a cat scan of the the thyroid to see if there were nodules and then probably a biopsy to see if the tumor was malignant.
