Strep throat symptoms that go away with antibiotics then come back?

by Symptom Advice on December 2, 2010

I've been to the doctor 3 times for strep throat twice they gave me antibotics and the symptoms came back twice. Do i need to go back for more or should I get checked for something else like rheumatic fever.

First, are you taking the whole course of antibiotics? some people stop taking them when they feel better, and it never completely goes away. also, Kelly is totally right about the toothbrush. I went to the dollar store and got a pack of a dozen toothbrushes for a dollar, and I keep them around for when I get sick. yes, they are cheap, but they are perfect for this situation. Use them for one day, throw them away, use a new one every day till you're cured. if you can't find a cheap pack like that, running it though the dishwasher every night will work, or I have even left mine soaking in a glass of Listerine.

Kelly is right! (very interesting)

Here is what webMD has to say…………

For the first 24 to 48 hours after you start taking an antibiotic, you are still contagious. You can avoid passing the strep throat infection to others and reinfecting yourself by:

Avoiding sneezing or coughing on others.
Washing your hands often.
Using tissues you can throw away, not handkerchiefs.
Throwing out your toothbrush as soon as you feel sick. Replace it again when you are well. You can also clean your toothbrush well before using it again. Bacteria can collect on the bristles and reinfect you.

Sometimes, you need to get stronger antibiotics. I get strep throat a lot, and sometimes the amoxicillin works, and other times, it takes a stronger antibiotic (like Ceflor/Ceflacor) to make the strep bacteria go away.
