What are the symptoms of ADHD in a 4 year old boy?

by Symptom Advice on November 29, 2010

My son has trouble sitting for short periods of time. He starts pre-k next week. My husband was ADHD as a child and medicated. how do I have peace of mind without a child psychologist? What are the signs and are there any treatment other than medicine?

First check his diet and see if eating less sugar and additives help. Then check he doesn't spend too long on computer games or watching television. Then see if he can sit still if he really wants to. I don't mean bribe him but does he sit and finish his favourite food? also remember 4 years is very young and many children at that age don't sit still for long, try and send him to a pre k that will give him lots of gross motor activity, running, jumping, climbing etc. also give him Omega three fish oils. this has been shown to really improve concentration. Don't get too uptight as this can make him feel stressed as well. Only comment when he is sitting well. Remember if you say something often enough your child will believe it. so if you constantly say to him and in his hearing, 'Y never sits still'. Then it will happen.

chadd.org Here is one source for some good information. My son is ADHD, and we had to fight like hell with his teachers and pediatrician before they would diagnose it. My advice is to find a GOOD pediatrician with experience dealing with ADD. When we switched pediatricians, they got his meds adjusted quickly and it was so much better. I will tell you though that most doctors hesitate to diagnose ADD until they start school. Just be well-informed and ready to fight for his side. good luck!
