What are the symptoms of tetanus[if thats what it is called]?

by Symptom Advice on December 11, 2010

you get it from cutting yourself on a rusty nail
or a dog bite, its a blood poisoning condition
the injection you have is a tetanus injection
to protect yourself from contracting it fully

The incubation period varies from a few days to a few weeks. then there's general tiredness or weakness followed by spasm of the jaw muscles (called lockjaw). Spasm of the muscles of the face can make the person appear to have a fixed grin. Spasms may occur spontaneously or be triggered by stimulation, such as noise or light.

Other symptoms include:

problems with swallowing or breathing
arching of the back and neck
inability to pass urine
sweating
abnormal heart rate and blood pressure

There is an entire website dedicated to tetanus, which I have posted. To answer your question, symptoms may include: headache, stiffness of the jaw (lockjaw), severe muscle spasms, sweating, fever, stiffness of abdominal muscles, and/or difficulty swallowing. Symptoms usually begin about 8 days after infection, but may range in onset from 3 days to 3 weeks.
If you suspect that you have tetanus or may get it (ex, you stepped on a rusty nail, etc.), get yourself to a doctor a get a shot. I've had a couple in my life and they really don't hurt that bad.

You are correct; name of the condition is tetanus, and it refers to prolonged contraction of the striated muscle fibers that are located in skeletal muscle. Tetanus is actually caused by a toxin released by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. It's a neurotoxin, causing the nerve cells to continuously contract the muscle fibers.

While there are numerous forms of tetanus, the most common is called generalized tetanus, whose first symptom is lockjaw, where the muscle of the lower jaw seize and it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to open one's jaw. this is followed by stiffness of the neck (which can affect swallowing and speech) and spreads down the body. Other symptoms are fever, sweating, elevated blood pressure and heart rate…similar to symptoms of other bacterial infections.

The tetanus vaccine allows the body to generate antibodies to the bacteria so that if/when it enters the body, the body can destroy it before the neurotoxin is released.

I hope that answers your question!

there is a swelling around the wound
there is a rise in temperature as you body slowly fights infection
you feel drousy and sick and lose your appetite

you might get blood poisoning which is seen around the wound as a red line develops slowley ascends your arm

you then need antibiotics and you'll be right as rain
