Your Questions About Symptoms Of Dog Bladder Infection

by Symptom Advice on April 4, 2011

We recently moved to a new home and I thought my dog was just being temper mental by waiting until we left to go potty in the house. He's always been very stubborn. but lately there have been more pee accidents and I've caught him a few times peeing for long periods of time.

I took him for a walk today, he peed one long pee then squated 3 more times but I'm not 100% sure anything came out. What exactly are symptoms that he has a bladder infection?

~He's a beagle and he's about 4 years old if you need specifics.Thank you.Thank you all so far! And yes, he is spayed.

Swelling in the lower abdomen, blood in the urine, a very strong smell similair to amonia, cloudy urine, licking the genital area more than usual, straining to urniate, or the inability to pass urine.I recommend immediately taking your dog to the vet. Don't wait, because it could be very serious, and may end up causing extreme harm to your dog.

My male chihuahua dog occasionally eliminates two drops of blood after urinating, which is considered a sign of bladder or Urinary tract infection. he has no other symptoms. What has the doctor prescribed for your dog and has it worked? I have two differing opinions now… and i am trying to get it right the first time. Thank!!

I have a dog that I'm treating a UTI on right now. A urinalysis was done to determine what kind of infection she has. Bacteria and struvite crystals were found on the test. the urine was cultured out to determine which antibiotic would work the best. she is currently on clavamox and a special diet. she is doing great now.

My malamute is suddenly urinating in the house. She's never done this before. I will take her to the vet but hope someone will let me know if they've experienced this with their older dog and if it's a sign of a bladder infection. thanks so much for sharing your info with me.

In an older dog, I'd be extremely concerned that this is a health problem. Might be a UTI or bladder infection, but could also be signaling more serious diseases like diabetes or renal failure, etc. Especially if this is paired with polydipsia (excessive drinking).

UTI/bladder infection:

-urinates frequently-housebroken dog suddenly goes in the house (may see this near the door as dog knows to go outside)-cloudy urine-discharge-whimpering when urinating-waiting to go because it's painful to go-excessive licking due to discomfort-urgently signal a need to go out and then only pees a few drops

If she's just peeing a lot and in inappropriate places without the signs above, it may well be a sign of more serious disease. Please to get her to the vet ASAP!

You're good to be on top of these behavioral changes and realize it means a vet visit is in order. good luck!

peeing in the house once every 2ish weeks? I have posted questions on here abt my 1 year old dog who every 2 weeks or so would have an accident. I thought it was the rain and her not wanting to go out. A week and a half ago she was diagnosed with an infection and crystals in her urine. Since then we have had no accidents and 2 horrible rain storms that she went out in no problem and peed.

Kinda made me wonder… if she could have had the infection the whole time and just could NOT hold it any longer when she finally did go in the house. she also never asked to go out the times she had the accident. the first symptom she had of it was the night b4 I took her in when she was peeing every 30 seconds and begging to go out the minute I let her in.

Thanks just curious if it is possible or not as this am I was shocked…I was laying watching tv with my son…again rainy… and she ran up licking my hand and when I looked at her she ran to the door.I took her in the 1st time and the vet told me there was not enough bacteria to be causing the problem…… was just curious if it could have built from there.

It's possible. That's why, when a dog who is pretty well housetrained starts to have accidents, you'll see lots of people on here saying that the first step is to go to the vet and make sure it isn't physical.

I think that infections can be mild, low-grade, and persistent, then build up or flare up.

Last week I brought my 19-month-old, neutered male labrador retriever to the off leash dog park. as usual, dogs loved to hump him.

i just take that he is a bit more submissive than others and you know, once one has picked on him, others will follow.

a lady, whom i hadn't seen before (i am a regular at the dog park) came over to me and asked if my dog had bladder infection. i asked her why, she said she had once brought her dog to a doggy day care and the person there told her if a dog get humped all the time, it might indicate that he has a bladder infection.

although i thought this is kind of ridiculous and i have never heard of it, i thought i might as well just do a google search and i don't see any symptoms as these websites have suggested.

have anyone heard about this before that a dog get humped all the time meaning he might have bladder infection?

thanks and please excuse my ignorance.

admin answers:

The first sign of a bladder infection is that the dog will have to go, but is having trouble going. when mine has a bladder infection she will run out and pee. then she'll walk 20 feet and squat again. And she'll repeat this a third time.

The other dogs are just picking on him for his submissive behavior.
