How do i cure my dogs skin problem?

by Symptom Advice on June 17, 2011

type of dog .jack Russell cross

whats wrong .psoriasis

symptoms .red skin hair loss some scabs dry skin flaky skin and minor irritation

what i am doing .aloevera gel everyday oatmeal bath every day hypo-allergenic food and shampoo

age .1 year 1 month

other .dusty house 2 other dogs fun life 2-3 walks a day flea treated and worms he is neuterered male

2 practical things you can do:
1) give your dog 1/2 tsp per day of cold-pressed Wheatgerm Oil (if not gluten intolerant). This is packed with Vitamin E which does wonders for new skin cell growth. (Worked for my dog noticeably in 2 weeks with a nice shiny coat on the way back).
2) get Sebocalm Shampoo from the vet. This is a high-tech shampoo with very tiny spherules that is good for skin conditions. (Also worked for my dog).

If neither of these help then the vet needs to look again at mites or flea allergies.

If your vet has not already done this, a thyroid panel should be run. If it comes back low normal you should treat. Hypothyroidism is rampant in all breeds for some reason, and the symptoms you describe can be attributed to the condition. The blood needs to be sent to a lab that will do a full test, not just the T3 and T4 that most local labs do, so if you decide to have this done make sure your money and time isn't wasted and tell your vet you want the full panel run.

Could be a skin condition, you might want to take the dog to the vet. Sometimes its mange, or just need a better diet, or just need some more oil in his dog food. Someone told me that dogs need oil in order to have good hair and clear skin…so give it some oil on its food, maybe it'll do better. Hope this helps

I would investigate a raw diet and see if that helps. It often does.

Are you sure that bathing him every day is a good idea.

I would ask your vet

A bath every day is too much.. even with shampoo for skin conditions, it still strips the natural oils away and makes dry skin worse.

What kind of food are you feeding? Did the vet recommend the type of food as well? Most vets don't have a very good nutritional education, as it is funded by a certain brand of dog food and promotes that kind of food only. If you are feeding Science Diet of any kind, scrap it now! Go to the pet food store and get a really good food.. no grain preferably, Wellness is an excellent food. Natural Balance also is a great food that has several allergy formulas.

Check your food ingredients.. if there is any corn, by-products, animal fat, brewers rice.. you know for sure it's no good for a dog with skin conditions.

You want a food that has meat as the first ingredient, and not a meat that says "meal" after it.

A good food should start out something like… Lamb, Lamb meal. It should have no preservatives other than to state (preserved with mixed tocopherols).

Some flea medication can cause or further exacerbate existing skin problems. If you are using advantage or frontline etc cut it out for a while.

I recommend feeding a supplement such as Dr Maggies skin and coat. or another similar supplement that has vitamin E, fish oils and flax seed oils.

Cut out any treats with multiple ingredients.. feed freeze dried liver or chicken jerky, or turkey jerky only.

The less ingredients the better.

If it IS allergies you should speak to your vet about diphenhydramine (aka Benedryl) which can be given to dogs to help them.
