What does 'functional in origin' mean regarding symptoms of pain?

by Symptom Advice on March 9, 2011

This is to do with symptoms after an accident. A consultant said he couldn't find any structural reason for the symptoms and that they were functional in origin.

Literally it would mean without a known organic cause or structural change at the point of which they originate.

Functional is just a medical term meaning exactly what you described, no known etiology or 'cause'.
